October 23, 2017

Terry George's 2016 historical drama, "The Promise," will be screened on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 12:30 p.m. in the Myrtle Beach Education Center as part of Coastal Carolina University's Department of History's War & Society Film Series. This event is free and open to the public.

Set during the Ottoman Empire, the film depicts a rivalry between Mikael, an Armenian-born medical student, and Chris, a renowned American journalist working in Paris, as they vie for the affections of Ana, an Armenian-born woman raised in France. Gunn spent nearly six years living and researching abroad in Budapest, Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya, His primary research interests include Turkey, Cyprus, the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans, Caucasus and the Eastern Mediterranean, transnational political violence and reconciliation.

The War & Society Film Series aims to inspire discussion and offer information on societal impacts during and after wars. "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" is the next film in the series to be shown on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m.
