Joe Oestreich, professor and chair of the Department of English at Coastal Carolina University, will read from his critically acclaimed new book, "Partisans," on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

"Partisans" is a collection of 15 essays Oestreich has written over the past decade. Topics range from financing a trip to Mexico by attending timeshare presentations to growing up next to a man who would later be convicted of murder.

"'Partisans' is a collection about drawing lines," Oestreich said, "about where we fit in in adulthood, in life, in suburbia and in our own skins."

Oestreich's essays have appeared in Esquire, Creative Nonfiction, River Teeth, Fourth Genre, and The Normal School. He is the author of two other nonfiction books: "Lines of Scrimmage" (co-written with Scott Pleasant) and "Hitless Wonder." Four of his essays have been cited in the Best American series, and he has received special mention twice in the Pushcart Prize anthology. His next book, "Waiting to Derail," is about the musician Ryan Adams and will be published in 2018.

"I love attending the Words to Say It events because they are the hub of the literary community in the Grand Strand," said Oestreich. "This night I'm lucky; I'm the one reading."

CCU's visiting writers series, "The Words to Say It," brings several critically acclaimed authors to campus each year. These authors are selected both for their literary skill and their commitment to the socially transformative imagination.

The Johnson Auditorium is in Room 116 of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, located at 119 Chanticleer Drive E. on the main Conway campus. Parking is available in lot R, outside the Brittain building and adjacent to the Wall building; for more information, visit coastal.edu/safety/parking.
