TEAL Youth Day brings Horry County students to CCU on Nov. 3

November 2, 2017

Coastal Carolina University and the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program will host TEAL Youth Day: Talking Education and Learning on Friday, Nov. 3, from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the CCU campus. Some 155 students from eight Horry County elementary schools and four middle schools will attend.

The purpose of the event is to provide children and youth participating in the mentoring program the opportunity to visit a college campus to see where their mentors go to school. Mentors normally visit children at their school each week. Not only does it make the college experience more "real" to these students, but it motivates them to consider higher education for their own futures.

TEAL Youth Day is hosted by at least 157 CCU student mentors as well as 50 student volunteers, faculty and staff members. The event will feature a variety of activities that illustrate the possibilities available in college, such as athletics, service and artistic expression. Also, each student will receive a new book to promote literacy and reading.

Attending elementary schools from Horry County are Aynor, Carolina Forest, Conway, Ocean Bay, Socastee, South Conway, St. James and Waccamaw. About 172 mentors are serving in 22 elementary schools in Horry and one in Georgetown County.

Attending middle schools from Horry County are Conway, Myrtle Beach, Ten Oaks and Whittemore Park. Another 76 mentors are serving in nine middle schools in Horry and one in Georgetown County.

TEAL Youth Day will also be held in Spring 2018 with additional schools participating.

The Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring program is housed in CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement within the Spadoni College of Education. The program encourages CCU students to be positive role models for children in area schools to ensure their success in and out of the classroom.
