A Coastal Carolina University student recently won a Tourism Student Award from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) and the South Carolina Travel and Tourism Coalition.

Kara Mari Funk of Conway, a senior majoring in hospitality, resort and tourism management, received the award for demonstrating outstanding academic achievement in her field. She was presented the award along with a $1,500 scholarship at a ceremony at the Lace House in Columbia on Nov. 1.

Funk was one of nine South Carolina college students from hospitality-related programs chosen for the award.

She was nominated by faculty of the hospitality, resort and tourism management program in CCU's E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. The program combines a standard business curriculum with specialized coursework and internships in the areas of quality process management and resort planning.

During her four years at Coastal, Funk has blended academics, extracurricular clubs and work experience to prepare for her future career in the hospitality industry. She is also a rider for the CCU equestrian club.

In addition to her studies, Funk works as a housekeeping supervisor and a management trainee at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront.

"I have wonderful support from the management team at my workplace," said Funk, who hopes to continue with the company after graduation in May.

"Receiving this award reminded me that always trying to give 100 percent to both my academics and to my job is paying off," said Funk. "I am honored to have been chosen."

The South Carolina Travel and Tourism Coalition sponsored the award, and the scholarships are provided through PRT's Fred Brinkman Memorial Fund.
