Viola virtuoso Ziyu Shen will perform a recital of traditional and contemporary music for viola and piano on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University's Edwards Recital Hall. Tickets are $17, with discounts available.

Shen, 20, will be accompanied by Daniel Francis, teaching associate in CCU's Department of Music. At 14, Shen won the Johansen International Competition for Young String Players in Washington, D.C., and the next year she won the chamber music competition of Morningside Bridge Chamber Music Festival in Canada. In 2017, she made her debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and Merkin Concert Hall in New York. She has performed internationally in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, England and Austria and as soloist with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

Francis earned a Master of Music in piano performance from the University of South Carolina and has performed with touring artists including Adrienne Danrich, Lawrence Craig, Kirsten Chavez, Sarah Reese and Joe Chappel. He is the pianist for the Carolina Master Chorale and the Long Bay Symphony.

"Shen is a remarkable performer; at just 20 years old she has positioned herself as one of the most prominent and up-and-coming violists today," said Amy Tully, associate professor of music and associate dean of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. "We are lucky to have her perform on the Grand Strand twice in one week - once with the Long Bay Symphony as guest soloist on Sunday, Nov. 12, and then a solo recital at CCU on Nov. 14. I think audiences will be thrilled with her artistry."
