CCU, Santee Cooper team up for ‘Green Power’ football game

November 13, 2017

When the Coastal Carolina University football team rushes onto the teal field on Dec. 2, they will kick off the inaugural Chants Up for Green Power Game, which will be 100 percent powered by Santee Cooper Green Power. The game against Georgia Southern, sponsored by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority, also will be celebrated as a zero waste game. To achieve zero waste, CCU's sustainability team will work to divert 90 percent or more of the waste produced inside the stadium, suite areas and alumni tailgate through composting and recycling.

"Teal and green have always been great color partners during our longtime relationship with Santee Cooper," said Matt Hogue, CCU director of athletics. "Sustainability at CCU is serious business and we are thrilled to showcase that commitment during our game, Dec. 2. We thank Santee Cooper for leading this initiative, and we encourage fans to join us for the season finale, wear teal and think green."

This game adds to the list of renewable energy firsts between Santee Cooper and Coastal Carolina University. Santee Cooper was the first company to produce Green Power in the state, and CCU is home to the first solar pavilion in South Carolina. The 16-kilowatt solar project, which has solar panels that use the sun for energy, was dedicated on Nov. 1, 2006, and is located on Chanticleer Drive East.

"Coastal Carolina has always been a great partner," said Mike Poston, vice president of retail services at Santee Cooper. "We are proud to partner again with CCU in a renewable initiative that highlights our shared commitment to improve the environment, this time through the reduce, reuse and recycle efforts at the inaugural Chants Up for Green Power Game."

Santee Cooper Green Power was born in 2001 in Chanticleer territory at Horry County Solid Waste Authority. Now, Santee Cooper has 28 megawatts of clean, renewable Green Power from sources including six landfill methane gas-generating stations, one wind turbine and six solar arrays.

Green Power is Green-e Energy certified, which means it meets the environmental and consumer protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions.
