Civil rights advocate to speak at CCU’s annual MLK celebration

January 8, 2018

Coastal Carolina University will celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with an evening of song and inspirational words on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Coastal Theater of the Lib Jackson Student Union. The event is free and open to the public.

The program will feature a lecture by Gregory A. Dear Jr. and a performance by the Coastal Inspirational Ambassadors, CCU's gospel choir. Each year, the Office of Multicultural Student Services hosts the event to commemorate King's legacy of unity and inclusion. Students, faculty/staff and the community are strongly encouraged to attend this event.

Dear is a civil rights advocate from Washington, D.C., currently working at the Equal Rights Center as a civil rights field researcher.

"Mr. Dear assists with civil rights investigations and identifies unlawful discrimination, thus ensuring that we all not only see the mountaintop, but reach it," said Franklin Ellis, assistant director of Multicultural Student Services at CCU.

The Coastal Inspirational Ambassadors is one of the original student performing ensembles and has performed at events on campus, across the region and the state. The group strives to preserve the tradition of gospel music and to recognize the importance of gospel in the preservation of African-American history.

"The life of MLK reminds us of the fight to gain civil rights and equality in our nation as well as serves as a beacon of hope to keep fighting for justice and equity," said Franklin Ellis, the multicultural services assistant director at CCU.

While the event is free, a ticket is required for admission. Tickets are available at the Wheelwright Box Office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or at coastal.edu/culturalarts. The Wheelwright Box Office is located inside the Wheelwright Auditorium lobby, and hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Coastal Theater is located in Room A-110 of the student union at 106 Spadoni Park Circle on the main Coastal campus in Conway. Parking is available in lots E and MM; visit coastal.edu/safety/parking.
