Denis Villeneuve's 2016 Academy Award-winning film "Arrival" will be shown Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Coastal Theater as part of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Communication Movie Night. The event is free and open to the public.

In "Arrival," linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators in exploring 12 mysterious spaceships that have touched down in locations around the world. As nations consider the real possibility of global war, Banks and her crew must find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors.

Following the screening, Deborah Breede, professor, and Andrea Bergstrom, assistant professor, both in CCU's Department of Communication, Media and Culture, will discuss the nuances and nature of communication in the film. "The central conflict is a communicative one - how to communicate with 'the Other' in order to, perhaps, save the planet," said Breede. "Not only is our ability to language called into question, but our ability to empathize and understand those who are vastly different from us also becomes paramount in this beautifully filmed and directed movie. Verbal and nonverbal communication, intercultural and cross-cultural communication, interpersonal and mass communication, and perhaps more importantly, our very identities are all central to the film's plot, characterizations and ultimate resolution."
