CCU reschedules workshop for lawyers on Title IX and navigating the impact of substance abuse

January 18, 2018

Coastal Carolina University has rescheduled a seminar on Title IX issues in higher education and on substance abuse and ethics for attorneys for Friday, Jan. 26, in the Atheneum Hall Ballroom on campus. The conference is approved for four hours of credit by the Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. Registration is limited to 50 people, and registrants must be licensed members of the S.C. Bar Association.

The workshop was originally planned for Jan. 4, but had to be postponed due to inclement weather.

The event will provide useful information, insight and interaction to further understanding of the Title IX act of the Education Amendments of 1972, the University's role in complying with the act, and what to expect should a client be involved with a Title IX investigation. The South Carolina Bar's Lawyers Helping Lawyers program will present a session on preventative services and educational outreach provided to judiciary and bar organizations.

The sessions titles are "Title IX: An Investigative Standpoint vs. Educational and Preventative Standpoint," "Interim Remedies and Action Plans Involving Treatment Resulting from a Violation" and a presentation on mental health and substance abuse.

Presenters include Jennie Cassidy, senior director of counseling services; Denise Perez, Title IX coordinator; Travis Overton, vice president for executive initiatives and chief of staff for CCU; and Robert Turnbull, director of Lawyers Helping Lawyers.

The event begins at 9 a.m. with registration and a light continental breakfast and concludes at 2:30 p.m. with closing remarks.

The Office of the President and the Office of University Counsel are sponsoring the seminar. Lawyers Helping Lawyers is a committee of the S.C. Bar Association that assists lawyers and judges addicted to alcohol or drugs and those suffering from depression.
