Ari Folman's 2008 drama "Waltz with Bashir" will be shown Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater as part of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Middle East Politics Film Series. This event is free and open to the public.

"Waltz with Bashir" incorporates both animation and documentary filmmaking to render the filmmaker's search for his lost memories from the Lebanon War. As he takes the plunge to rediscover his past, atrocities committed in the war begin to resurface. Following the screening, Christopher Gunn, assistant professor of history, and Samih Baalbaki, instructor with CCU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, will lead a discussion on memory and repression within conflict and war.

"The film depicts the trauma surrounding the filmmaker's experiences and lost memories from the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon," says Gunn. "In many ways, Lebanon was Israel's own Vietnam, and the film asks questions such as 'Why are we here?' or 'Why are we fighting?'"

This film is rated R and contains content that may be inappropriate for children. Parental and viewer discretion is advised. This film is in Hebrew with English subtitles.
