The Words to Say it: Visiting Writers Series welcomes Ira Sukrungruang as he reads from his forthcoming work Buddha’s Dog and Other Meditations at 5:30 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116. The CCU Department of Music presents the CCU Flute Studio Recital, a performance of works by Bach, Mozart, Hindemith, Rutter and Hannaway, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. Jen Boyle, professor in CCU’s Department of English and the 2018 HTC Distinguished Teacher Scholar Lecturer, presents a lecture titled “Real or Fake: News and Writing in Contemporary Times” at 1

From flautists to the King of England and a workshop dedicated to empowering women of all ages, this week's guide covers a lot of ground and is sure to appeal to a wide range of interests. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

MUSIC

The CCU Department of Music presents the CCU Flute Studio Recital, a performance of works by Bach, Mozart, Hindemith, Rutter and Hannaway, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. Flute Studio musicians perform individually, followed by a performance by the CCU Flute Choir.

Tuesday, March 27

FILM

The Department of Communication, Media and Culture will present a screening of "The King's Speech" (2010) at 6 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A110). Following the screening, Cassandra Hill, assistant professor in CCU's Department of Communication, Media and Culture, will discuss the importance of public speaking and public speaking instruction.

WORKSHOP

Francine Edwards, interim dean for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Delaware State University, will lead a workshop titled "Sisters in Service" at 6 p.m. in the Wall Boardroom, Room 222. This workshop, designed to aid and empower women of all ages to engage with service and lead with confidence, is part of Coastal Carolina's Women's History Month Celebrations.

The Words to Say it: Visiting Writers Series welcomes Ira Sukrungruang as he reads from his forthcoming work Buddha's Dog and Other Meditations at 5:30 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116. Sukrungruang is the author of the memoirs Southside Buddhist and Talk Thai: The Adventures of Buddhist Boy in addition to collections of short stories and poetry.

MUSIC

The College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, featuring the CCU Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble, and world music ensemble CalypSamba in concert, will take place in Wheelwright Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature Concerto for Cootie by Duke Ellington, traditional Brazilian samba enredo and samba batucada rhythms, and Andrew Fowler's Murrells Inlet-inspired choral piece "Over Yonder's Ocean."

LECTURE

Jen Boyle, professor in CCU's Department of English and the 2018 HTC Distinguished Teacher Scholar Lecturer, presents a lecture titled "Real or Fake: News and Writing in Contemporary Times" at 10 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Education Center on 79th Avenue in Myrtle Beach. Boyle will discuss the Digital Polarization Project, a student study about the ways algorithms work to normalize fake news and social media feeds.
