‘Goddess of flute’ Jasmine Choi performs at CCU to kick off South Carolina Flute Society Spring Festival

April 2, 2018
Jasmine Choi, named one of top 10 flutists in music history, performs a concert at CCU Friday, April 6, to open the South Carolina Flute Society Spring Festival

Hailed as "the goddess of flute" by the Korea Times, Jasmine Choi performs a recital of traditional and contemporary music for flute and piano on Friday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University.

Selected as one of the top 10 flutists in music history by Sinifini Magazine UK in 2015, Choi is a full-time performer of more than 100 concerts each season in genres ranging from solo, chamber and orchestral to experimental, jazz and pop. Her musical curiosity has also prompted her to create her own arrangements of major works, including the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky violin concertos. She has performed as soloist with the Berlin Symphony at the Philharmonie's New Year's Eve concert and with the Vienna Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyungChang, Korea. She has also recorded several CDs under the Sony Classical label.

The South Carolina Flute Society holds its spring festival at numerous locations throughout the campus of CCU on Saturday, April 7. The annual festival involves master classes, exhibits and four competitions: Young Artist (students at the postgraduate level), Collegiate Artist, Senior Artist (10th-12th grade) and Junior Artist (9th grade and under). Winners of each category earn cash prizes and an opportunity to perform at next year's festival. In addition, the winners of the Masterclass Performers competition (undergraduate through doctoral levels), held earlier this year, will perform with Choi at the festival.

"This organization is so important to the South Carolina flutist," said Amy Tully, president of the South Carolina Flute Society, associate professor in CCU's Department of Music and associate dean of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. "It is a place where students can converse with professionals, learning more about their craft and the music business in general. I am honored to be able to host this festival at my home institution and bring such quality musicians and performers to this region."

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. Parking is available in lots directly adjacent near the back of the building or in J lot near the Singleton building. Visit coastal.edu/aboutccu/campusmap.

Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for CCU students.
