Music, social awareness and the power of story take centerstage this week as the South Carolina Flute Society kicks off its Spring Festival, Peter Rabinowitz visits for a lecture on narrative flavor, and both CCU faculty and students discuss being transgender. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

ART

Graduating seniors from CCU's Department of Visual Arts with a focus in art studio exhibit work completed as theses. The gallery is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An artist reception will be held Thursday, April 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibit and reception are located in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery.

FILM

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies presents a free screening of "Young Dr. Freud"/ "Der Junge Freud," a film about the early life of Sigismund Freud in the Coastal Theater. Following the screening, Gary Schmidt, professor and chair of the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, will discuss how Freud's ideas about sexuality challenges the dominant ideas of the time.

MUSIC

Coastal Carolina University Wind Ensemble presents its closing performance of the 2018 semester in Wheelwright Auditorium. Under the direction of CCU director of bands, T. Andrè Feagin, the group performs a program titled "Liberation," featuring masterworks for the wind band, including Howard Hanson's Chorale and Alleluia and David Maslanka's "Liberation." CCU guest composer-in-residence John Mackey will join the ensemble for the performance.

CCU's world music ensemble, CalypSamba, under the direction of Jesse Willis, associate professor in the Department of Music, is proud to host the Summerville High School Green Wave Steelband, directed by John Wilmarth, for a spring concert in Wheelwright Auditorium. Joining the two groups is guest artist Joe Galvin, a multi-instrumentalist who has performed concerts throughout the nation and is a past winner of the Percussive Arts Society World Percussion Ensemble Competition.
