Music, movies and more this week at CCU

“Beyond the Crossroads” at 7:30 p.m. on Singleton Lawn East, is a celebration of American blues music that includes both the classic sounds of artists such as B.B. King and the new styles that chaIn Silvio Soldini’s 2000 romantic comedy “Bread and Tulips,” a housewife decides to strike out by herself after being forgotten in a highway café during a bus trip.

Music holds centerstage this week, with Dan O'Reilly and POP 101 performing "Beyond the Crossroads" just a day before the Opera Scenes class and Concert Choir perform a series of opera favorites. The Edwards College hosts an exhibition of graduating seniors' art, and Silvio Soldini's 2000 rom-com "Bread and Tulips" leads into a discussion of women's portrayals in popular media. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

"Beyond the Crossroads" at 7:30 p.m. on Singleton Lawn East, is a celebration of American blues music that includes both the classic sounds of artists such as B.B. King and the new styles that characterize the contemporary blues scene. Directed by Dan O'Reilly, CCU lecturer of music, the concert features POP 101, CCU's contemporary music ensemble of student vocalists, horn players, guitarists, bass players, keyboardists and drummers.

Graduating seniors from CCU's Department of Visual Arts with a focus in graphic design exhibit work completed as theses. Meet the artists and discuss their work and future plans at the gallery reception. The exhibit will be held at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery and will be open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from April 24 to May 4. The gallery reception will be held on May 3 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

MOVIES

In Silvio Soldini's 2000 romantic comedy "Bread and Tulips," a housewife decides to strike out by herself after being forgotten in a highway café during a bus trip. Deciding not to wait for her husband and sons to come back to pick her up, Rosalba begins hitchhiking home only to take a detour to Venice. There, she meets a wide cast of new and fascinating people and starts to explore life anew. Following the screening, Elisa Modolo, lecturer in CCU's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, will lead a discussion on the representation of the solo female traveler and the alternative depiction of a famous city. The movie begins at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, located in the Lib Jackson Student Union.

MUSIC

CCU's Opera Scenes class and Concert Choir combine to present an evening of opera favorites. The performance features a concert version of Abu Hassan, Carl Maria von Weber's comic opera in one act, based on a story in "One Thousand and One Nights." The CCU Concert Choir performs opera choruses and student soloists present beloved arias under the direction of Timothy Koch and accompanied by pianist Daniel Francis, both teaching associates in CCU's Department of Music. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Church, 3000 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach.
