CCU goes ‘Beyond the Crossroads’ with an evening of classical and contemporary blues music

April 20, 2018
Led by Dan O’Reilly, Coastal Carolina University’s contemporary music ensemble POP 101 performs blues hits in an outdoor evening concert.

Coastal Carolina University's contemporary music ensemble, POP 101, will present a concert featuring classic and contemporary blues selections on Wednesay, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in a covered tent on Singleton Lawn East. General admission is $7, with CCU discounts available.

"Beyond the Crossroads" is a celebration of American blues music that includes both the classic sounds of artists such as B.B. King and the new styles that characterize the contemporary blues scene. Directed by Dan O'Reilly, CCU lecturer of music, POP 101 features student vocalists, horn players, guitarists, bass players, keyboardists and drummers.

O'Reilly, lecturer of music at Coastal, earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in composition from Long Island University. He also has extensive performing experiences both in New York City and along the Grand Strand at such venues as the House of Blues, Broadway at the Beach and The Palace Theatre. He has appeared with Four Tops, The Temptations and Lou Rawls and has opened for B.B. King and The Doobie Brothers.

POP 101 is a dynamic group that performs popular music in a rock band context. Students across all disciplines sing and play instruments including guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and horns. The ensemble performs one concert each spring, and past themes have featured songs of the 1970s and '80s and hits by Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and many others.

Singleton Lawn East is located between the Singleton building and the Lib Jackson Student Center. Patrons should park in the Singleton lot, as the gate will be lifted for the event. Golf cart assistance will be available for those who need it.

General admission is $7. Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU alumni, teens and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $5. Tickets for children and CCU/HGTC students are $3. For tickets, call the Wheelwright Box Office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 843-349-2502.
