Video: Joy and inspiration spread during Special Olympics at CCU

October 30, 2018

"There's so much joy in the Special Olympics," said junior information technology major David Ejumeta.

Around 1,200 athletes and coaches were on Coastal Carolina University's campus on Oct. 27 for the South Carolina Special Olympics(SCSO) in a new partnership between SCSO, the city of Myrtle Beach and CCU.

The Opening Ceremonies were held Oct. 26 in Myrtle Beach and the majority of the sporting events were held on campus on Oct. 27, including disc golf and bocce ball.

Communications director Leigh Lowery said the day is "all about good competition." "It's a big deal for a lot of our athletes, and it's an honor for our athletes to compete at a collegiate stadium."

The games included unified athletes, which pairs an athlete who has intellectual disabilities with an athlete without disabilities.

"The concept is when you're on the field and you're all wearing the same uniform, you're all the same," said Lowery.
