In response to storms and flooding in recent years, South Carolina has created a statewide Floodwater Commission. Tom Mullikin, a research professor at Coastal Carolina University, was tabbed by S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster to chair the commission. In addition to that, a number of other scientists from CCU were chosen as commission members.

Paul Gayes, director of the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies; Len Pietrafesa, research professor; and Till Hanebuth, associate professor of coastal and marine systems science all serve on the commission under Mullikin.

May 5-11 is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. Throughout the next several days, we will spotlight efforts taken by our University to lead the charge for change in South Carolina so that all residents can be better informed and better prepared when the next storm strikes.
