A group of Swain Scholars at Coastal Carolina University has shifted from disappointment to making a positive difference.

Kassidy Smith, Jeremy Evans, and Hailey Wimmenauer had been selected to present their research at three conferences around the country this spring. Those conferences were canceled due to the pandemic.

The trio has now turned its focus away from what could have been, to mounting a campaign to help their peers cope with the pandemic.

Students selected to be Swain Scholars work with Coastal Carolina University faculty and community agencies to research health-related issues and implement community health programs. Swain Scholars receive scholarships up to $5,000 per year based upon academic and financial criteria, for a total of four semesters. This unique scholarship program is made possible by a generous donation from retired Myrtle Beach pharmacist Kenneth E. Swain.
