CCU’s Crandell joins South Carolina Humanities board of directors
South Carolina Humanities’ mission is “to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians.” Established in 1973, the nonprofit organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of academic and public members from across the state. Members initiate and develop projects focused on making the humanities accessible statewide, and take active roles in fundraising.
“I’m really excited to connect statewide initiatives to some of the amazing projects we have in our region, both within our surrounding community and in our institution,” Crandell said. “I’m also excited to learn from one of the most experienced and talented state humanities teams in the nation.”
Crandell’s experiences at the University helped prepare her to serve the state in this role.
“Since I started at Coastal, I’ve had the privilege of working within the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, helping guide experiential learning programs such as The Athenaeum Press and the Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies,” she said. “These initiatives have each allowed me to learn a lot more about doing meaningful, collaborative work with community members and other cultural institutions. There have been numerous CCU initiatives supported by SC Humanities, and I’ve seen firsthand what an impact this institution has on creating opportunities for conversations and meaningful projects.”
Crandell is not the board’s first member with CCU ties.
“Some of my most treasured colleagues and collaborators — Maggi Morehouse, Sara Sanders, Dan Ennis, Eric Crawford — have served on the SC Humanities board. It’s an honor and a privilege to follow in their footsteps of advocacy and innovation,” she said. “I’m so looking forward to meeting a lot of new faces throughout our region and across the state, and using the tools and insights that CCU has provided me to help represent our humanities initiatives and institution through this board.”
