Guest artist Jenny Lin, an internationally-recognized pianist with a prolific recording career, will perform Sunday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in Coastal Carolina University’s Edwards Recital Hall. The event is the second in CCU’s 2022 Spring Piano Series, sponsored by the Department of Music. Tickets are $18, with CCU discounts available.

Lin’s concert appearance also marks CCU’s official designation as an All-Steinway School, a ranking that coincides with the acquisition of two Steinway Spirio-r pianos, which were delivered to campus earlier this year. The All-Steinway School designation involves numerous qualifications, including a minimum inventory, ample student and faculty access to pianos, and specialized maintenance of the instruments. About 200 colleges and universities across the country hold this designation. CCU is the only state university to own a Steinway Spirio-r. Peter Wagner of Steinway & Sons Division of Education and Performance will be in attendance at the event to recognize CCU’s standing.

A Steinway Artist since 2011, Lin is known for her technical skill and adventurous spirit in the range of her repertoire. She regularly performs works by classical composers, including Haydn, Chopin, and Beethoven but has also mastered the work of numerous modern and contemporary composers. Her CCU concert will showcase the complexity of Lin’s artistry and the extraordinary capabilities of CCU’s new Steinway Spirio-r.

In a symbolic move of renewal and reinvestment, the two new Steinway pianos, which are housed in the Edwards Recital Hall and Wheelwright Auditorium, arrived during the yearlong celebration of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts 20th anniversary and replace a Steinway that was purchased when the building opened in 2001.

“The addition of the Steinway Spirio-r pianos reflects the Edwards College’s commitment to excellence in the area of music education and a strategic step toward enhancing remote and distance learning capabilities in the discipline,” said Philip Powell, professor in the Department of Music, who oversaw the acquisition of the Steinways in both 2001 and 2022. Using cutting-edge technology, the Spirio-r model not only offers concert-hall quality sound but has recording and live streaming capabilities that allow players in remote areas to listen and learn from recorded performances.

“This piano is as much a concert instrument as it is computer,” said Powell, in discussing potential learning opportunities with the Spirio-r. “The technology is such that they can record so much nuance in the keystroke and the pedaling and the velocity of hammer that it’s indistinguishable from a live performance.”
