Bat Boy at Coastal a zany comedy taken from the tabloids
General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 and younger. CCU students, faculty and staff are free with ID. Performances are at 7:30 nightly from Thursday to Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday and a 3 p.m. show on Sunday.
Described as an edgy production by director Greg London, a Coastal performing arts professor, Bat Boy is taken straight from the tabloid pages. A few years ago, The Weekly World News ran a series of far-fetched articles about a child discovered in a bat cave in West Virginia. The half human, half bat boy is brought by the town sheriff to the local veterinarians home, where he is accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a normal boy. But problems, of course, arise.
Its My Fair Lady meets Edward Scissorhands, said London, adding that the shows content is adult in theme and not suitable for children.
Written by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, with music and lyrics by Laurence OKeefe, Bat Boy was voted Best New Musical Off Broadway in 2002 and has become a favorite of theatrical venues across the country.
The shows music runs the gamut, London said, and includes hip hop, rap, country, Broadway-style and heavy metal.
A cast of 12 will perform the play, including freshman Trey Gerrald as the Bat Boy. Others are Shannon Cook, Diane Fabiano, Chris Bergamo, Stephen Webb, Danny Garrity, Emily Bryant, Jean Doyle, Matt James, Danielle Adams, Abigail Brown and Kristen Skarzynski.
