Subhash C. Saxena, a Coastal Carolina University mathematics professor, has made a gift that will establish an endowed scholarship for students who are studying computer science or business administration through Coastal’s academic partnership with the Ansal Institute of Technology in India.

In 2000, Coastal established a cooperative program with the Ansal Institute in New Dehli that allows Indian students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Coastal in either computer science or business administration. Participating students study for three years in India and two years at Coastal to earn their degree.

The scholarship will be awarded beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year, going first to qualified students studying computer science through the program. If no computer science student qualifies, the scholarship will then be available to a student in business administration. If no student from the Ansal Institute qualifies, the scholarship will be awarded to a qualified math major at Coastal.

The institute in New Delhi, India, has an academic partnership that allows Indian students to earn a Coastal degree in computer science or business administration by studying three years in India and then two years at Coastal.

Saxena, who has taught math for 40 years, was a member of Coastal’s mathematics faculty for 27 years. He was chairman of the department from 1987 to 1993. In 2000 he was named distinguished professor emeritus, though he still teaches at the university. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from the University of Delhi, and a Ph.D. in mathematics, also from the Indian university.

“It is a privilege for me to give this gift,” said Saxena, who wants to help provide educational opportunities for future generations.
