Rose Marie Hussey Johnson

Rose Marie was named Coordinator of Strategic Planning and Risk Management in November of 2008, after serving the University since February of 2007 in the Office of Development and Internal Audit. For five years prior to joining Coastal Carolina University, Rose Marie was the Assistant City Administrator for the City of Conway overseeing all six of the city’s administrative departments. Rose Marie also served the City of North Myrtle Beach for thirteen years as the Personnel Officer supervising human resources, employee safety, the city’s wellness program and workers compensation.
As the university’s risk manager, Rose Marie is responsible for securing all university insurance policies, monitoring all insurance claims, managing the university’s workers compensation program, reviewing contracts and leases relative to insurable needs, and acting as administrative support to the strategic management committee. Her duties include identifying potential human, physical, financial and natural losses in order to evaluate the best method for early intervention, education for best practices, and mitigation. She also serves on the emergency management committee.
Rose Marie earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Charleston and the University of South Carolina in 2001 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Charleston Southern University in May of 1984.
Rose Marie Is past president of the South Carolina Public Risk Management Association and a current member of the SCPRIMA board of directors. She is a member of the University Risk and Insurance Managers Association and she has been a featured speaker at the national URMIA conference. Rose Marie is also past president of the South Carolina Municipal Personnel Association, a graduate of Leadership Grand Strand Class of 94, a former trustee for the South Carolina Municipal Insurance Trust Fund, and has previously served on the United Way of Horry County Board of Directors. A devoted Chanticleer fan and native of Myrtle Beach, she is also a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Horry American Legion Post #111 and a Board of Directors’ Service Award from Conway Main Street U.S.A.
Coordinator of Insurance Services
Russell “Russ” Tyler was named Coordinator of Insurance Services in April of 2018 after serving the University since January of 2011 in the Facilities Planning and Management Department. As Coordinator of Insurance Services, Russ assists with evaluating and maintaining the University’s workers’ compensation insurance coverage as well as reporting and filing University insurance claims with the Insurance Reserve Fund and outside insurance carriers. Russ also assists with evaluating and maintaining the University’s insurance coverage by identifying and assessing different exposures to the university. Russ guides University departments regarding insurance-related questions, coverage issues, inventory control, and proper procedures for best risk management practices to identify and assess present and future risks. He also reviews certificates of coverage and maintains the COI database in conjunction with the Office of Procurement.
Coincidentally, Russ joined TEAL Nation as an employee and student in January of 2011 where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2015 and his Master of Business Administration degree in 2017. Russ considers himself lucky to be born in Conway, SC and blessed to have Coastal Carolina University in his hometown.
Russ is a member of the South Carolina Public Risk Management Association and a member of the University Risk and Insurance Managers Association. He also serves as Chairman of the Traffic Appeal Board within the Department of Public Safety.
