The physical landscape is baffling in its ability to transcend whatever we would make of it. It is as subtle in its expression as turns of the mind, and larger than our grasp; and yet it is still knowable. - Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams

Dr. Russell Fielding earned his Ph.D. in geography at Louisiana State University. His research investigates how people make healthy and sustainable use of natural resources in contexts characterized by societal and environmental change. Born and raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Fielding conducts research mostly in the coastal and island settings of the Caribbean on topics ranging from whaling to renewable energy to breadfruit agroforestry. He is the author of The Wake of the Whale: Hunter Societies in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, published in 2018 by Harvard University Press. In addition to his position on the faculty at Coastal Carolina, Fielding is a Visiting Fellow with the Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus program.
