Biography

Dr. Erica Kupinski currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music Education at Coastal Carolina University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary music education and supervises music student teachers. She previously held a one-year appointment as the chorus director at General Ray Davis Middle School in Conyers, Georgia. Prior to that she was Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky from 2015-2018. While at Murray State she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, was the music department’s teacher education liaison, and a university supervisor for elementary, general, and choral music student teachers. Dr. Kupinski's P-12 public and private school music teaching experiences include middle school chorus(6-8), elementary general music (PK-5) and adapted music education (P-12). She has previously served as a cantor, church musician, as well as the director of adult and children’s church choirs in Augusta, GA and North Augusta, SC.

Dr. Kupinski earned the Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Mississippi, a Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Georgia, and a Bachelor of Music in music education from Augusta State University. Her research interests include elementary general and choral music education, the history of music education, music teacher education, improvisation, social justice in music classrooms, world music, and musician health and wellness. She has completed Orff Levels I and II at Florida State University and Level III at Arizona State University. Dr. Kupinski has presented research on music teaching and learning at national and state music education conferences in Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and Florida. Her most recent Book Review: May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem was published online, January 15, 2020 in the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.

Dr. Kupinski is a member of the South Carolina Music Education Association (SCMEA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and the American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA). She is a former member of the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) and the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA), where she served as the District 1 College Representative. Dr. Kupinski has been named to membership in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the National Music Honor Society Pi Kappa Lambda, and holds a lifetime membership in the Tri-M music honor society.
