The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.” - Mark Twain

Biography

Emily completed two undergraduate degrees and a Masters in Teaching before deciding to pursue a PhD in Philosophy at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale; 7-12 Social Studies is fun but not as fun as philosophy! She completed a dissertation on canine-training programs in prisons as a Deweyan ethic for human/nonhuman animal relationships, which combined her passion for dogs, prison abolition, and John Dewey. She wants to assure everyone that, despite one of her favorite quotes from Mark Twain, she does like humans but sometimes they are a bit much and prefers the company of her dog, Mae. Or random dogs on the street. She is not particular. When she is not teaching philosophy, Emily enjoys playing soccer, walking on the beach, swimming, exercising, playing with her dog, drinking good beer and scotch, playing with her niece, listening to 80’s and 90’s R&B, and cooking. She also likes to eat the office candy that is supposed to be for her students. So, it’s very important that her students and colleagues stop by and chat so that it doesn’t disappear.
