Those approved for use of a respirator (see application and approval processes from links below) will be fit for a filtering device classified by its efficiency possibilities, or its respirator filter rating, which refer to the percentage efficiency at removing particles from breathing air.
The N95 respirator filters out at least 95 percent of airborne particles, while the N99 filters out at least 99 percent of airborne particles. Both devises fall under the jurisdiction of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and are included in the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) category as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.134 of the OSHA regulations.
