What do you get when you add a little beatboxing to three chamber orchestra instruments and multiply it by the power of social media? The answer is coming to Coastal Carolina University on March 25.

PROJECT Trio, a renowned three-piece instrumental ensemble gone viral, will perform a concert on Sunday, March 25, at 4 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Tickets are $17, and CCU discounts are available.

PROJECT Trio combines skilled artistry with rockstar-level energy to perform an extensive array of music ranging from Baroque to nu-Metal. Flutist Greg Pattillo, cellist Eric Stephenson and bassist Peter Seymour offer a new take on traditional chamber music that appeals to a broad, diverse array of musical tastes.

"I use the beatbox flute all the time because it's the sounds of today," Pattillo said in a recent interview with the Charlotte Symphony. "A lot of times when you deal with music like this, you hear sounds only of yesterday, and it's fun to bring the sounds of today to the music of yesterday. Mix it all together; that's very PROJECT Trio, too."

Founded in Boulder, Colo., in the summer of 2005, the trio got its big break in 2006 when Pattillo's beatbox flute video went viral on YouTube, receiving millions of views in its first week. PROJECT Trio has since become one of the world's most exciting instrumental ensembles.

In its 2015-16 concert season, PROJECT Trio toured internationally in Israel and Europe and debuted a new concerto titled "Scatter." The trio performs more than 70 concerts a year, having made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2010, and has appeared with the Charlotte, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis and New Jersey symphonies and at the Britt Festival, the Mainly Mozart Festival and the Chicago Sinfonietta.

Amy Tully, associate professor of music and associate dean of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, a flutist herself, views the trio's visit as a highlight of CCU's spring cultural arts lineup.

"PROJECT Trio is an amazing chamber group that blends their classical training with jazz improvisation and current popular styles," said Tully. "Not only is their sound unique, but so is their approach to audience approachability and genre inclusivity. Flutist Greg Pattillo began his career as an unknown YouTube sensation, and now has risen to a powerhouse in the classical and jazz world as a member of this ensemble. I feel this will be one of the most exciting performances of our cultural arts season."

PROJECT Trio enjoys a broad following on social media with a YouTube channel that has more than 80 million views and 100,000 subscribers, making it among the top-viewed instrumental ensembles on the internet.

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. Parking is available in lots directly adjacent near the back of the building or in J lot near the Singleton Building. Visit coastal.edu/aboutccu/campusmap.

General admission is $17. Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU alumni, teens and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $10. Tickets for children and CCU/HGTC students are $5.
