Wellness-Palooza anchors annual Wellness Week at CCU

March 21, 2018

Coastal Carolina University will celebrate Wellness Week with a variety of activities and events from Friday, March 23, through Friday, March 30. The events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Wellness Week promotes a healthy lifestyle through activities that encourage a positive outlook on all of the pieces of the whole self, including physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, environmental and social. The LiveWell Office and the partners of the LiveWell Coalition, including Counseling Services and University Recreation, all collaborate to create programs designed to prevent eating disorders, unhealthy dieting, anxiety and depression.

"We wanted to acknowledge all the areas of wellness that are not always acknowledged, but also very important," said Chris Donevant-Haines, assistant director of the LiveWell Office at CCU.

The centerpiece event for Wellness Week is Wellness-Palooza on Wednesday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. The activities for the event include games, healthy snacks, smoothies, eating disorder and depression screenings, and other attractions. The rain date for Wellness-Palooza is Wednesday, April 4, at the same time and location.

During the week, University Recreation will offer various health and exercise sessions, such as yoga, pilates, strength circuits, dance and spinning classes for students, faculty and staff. All of these group activities will take place in the HTC Center.

In addition to the indoor classes, University Recreation is hosting a kayak trip through Murrells Inlet on Friday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $20 a person. All kayaks and gear are provided. To register for the tour, contact outdoor recreation coordinator Beth Javener at ejavener@coastal.edu.

Other activities during the week include an interactive session about eating disorders, a depression workshop, an emotional regulation workshop, a mental health documentary featuring CCU alums, and a mindfulness workshop.

On Thursday, March 29, the LiveWell Office encourages CCU to participate in a "Day of Unplugging." Participants will make an effort to ignore their cellphones for the day and engage in face-to-face conversations.

The week will conclude with a two-day camping and hiking trip in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina beginning on Friday, March 30.
