Opioid crisis is the topic of discussion at Inspiring Women’s Luncheon at CCU

Sydney Brown and Ashley Lynch, Coastal Carolina University Swain Scholars, will present their research project titled "Perceptions of Opioids" during the April Inspiring Women's Luncheon on Tuesday, April 10, at noon in the Singleton Building Ballroom. Also scheduled to speak are Myrtle Beach Chief of Police Amy Prock and Ashley Capps, associate vice president for nursing operations at Tidelands Health. The luncheon is sponsored by Women in Philanthropy and Leadership at CCU.

In order to quantify perceptions of addiction, Lynch and Brown conducted their research in collaboration with local law enforcement, members of the Addicts Mom organization, and a state Sen. Greg Hembree.

A native of Philadelphia, Brown is a senior exercise and sport science major at Coastal. She also interns in the Department of Kinesiology and is a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. Brown also works full time with Wyndham Vacation Ownership and part time with Celebrations Nite Life.

Lynch, a native of Baltimore, Md., is a senior biology major at Coastal. She was a member of the women's soccer team and has served on the student-athlete advisory committee prior to becoming a Swain Scholar. She has presented her research at two Undergraduate Research competitions at CCU and at the American College Health Association research conference. She plans to pursue a career in the medical field after graduation.

Capps joined Tidelands Health in 2015 and is responsible for emergency departments, critical care units, women and children's services, and other programs. She has more than 17 years of clinical and operational experience. Before joining Tidelands Health, she served as a clinical educator, clinical supervisor and registered nurse at Asheville Specialty Hospital in Asheville, N.C. Capps holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Western Carolina University and an associate degree in nursing from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

Prock, who was sworn in as chief in July 2017, has served the Myrtle Beach Police Department for more than 20 years. The department has 30 officers and staff, and provides a wide range of protection and enforcement services for area residents, visitors and businesses. Brock began her career as a patrol officer in 1996 and has worked her way up through the ranks. She has served as supervisor of the Narcotics Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Regulatory Unit and Special Operations Unit, as well as a team leader of the Critical Incident Response Team. In 2014, Prock was appointed captain of the Strategic Planning Division, where she was instrumental in organizing the city's Memorial Day Weekend plans. Prock earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Radford University in 1996 and a master's in clinical psychology from Francis Marion University in 2002. She is also a graduate of the Administrative Officers Management Program.

The Swain Scholars program is comprised of selected undergraduate students from the public health, biochemistry, biology, exercise and sport science, and chemistry programs. Swain Scholars partner with community agencies in researching health-related issues and implement community health programs. The students receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per year based on academic and financial criteria. Learn more about the program here.
