Steel drums and world music set a festive tone in spring concert at CCU
CalypSamba has performed concerts throughout the nation and is a past winner of the Percussive Arts Society World Percussion Ensemble Competition. The award-winning Green Wave Steel Band is comprised of five steel band classes at Summerville High School in Summerville, S.C.
Galvin is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed on numerous Grammy-nominated albums; his most recent album is a collaboration with Michael Spiro titled "BAKINI - En el Nuevo Mundo," which combines the folkloric music of Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and Trinidadian lineages.
"They'll be playing music from Brazil, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago," said Willis. "Festival music is the trend or commonality among all three areas, and you'll get to see some great virtuosity and variety of music style."
Willis and Galvin first connected when they were graduate students at the University of Indiana.
"We met as musicians in town, in Bloomington," said Willis. "Joe played in a group of mine, and we connected on a lot of different musical activities. He's a fantastic player - a super talented guy who can do just about anything."
The collaboration between CCU and Summerville High School involves educational experiences in addition to the performance, and Willis believes the group is well prepared for the college-level experience.
"It's a very strong group and a really big program," said Willis. "They're looking for a culminating experience for the semester, so I suggested we do a combined concert on our campus; they'll come in early and work with me and Joe in a variety of contexts before putting on the show at night."
General admission is $7. Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU alumni, teens and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $5. Tickets for children and CCU/HGTC students are $3.
The Prince Lawn is located in the center of the main Conway campus between the Prince, Wall, Edwards and Smith buildings. A campus map is available here.
