Coastal Carolina University's Spadoni College of Education opened the Early Childhood Development and Literacy Center on campus on Aug. 13.

Nearly 30 children are currently enrolled, and up to 120 children between the ages of 3 and 5 will be accepted into the center, and there are enrollment options for school day, after school or the full day.

The center is located inside Kingston Hall with five literacy rooms, four classrooms and an outdoor playground. Four full-time instructors work in the classrooms, and students in CCU's elementary and early childhood education programs will be able to gain hands-on clinical experiences through the program.

Edward Jadallah, dean of the College of Education, says child development is closely connected to literacy education, and the establishment of a center that serves both these areas is benefits the community.

Angela Huggins, a former principal in Horry County, is the director of the center.

"I couldn't think of anything that I'd rather do," Huggins said, calling it her "dream job." "It's a perfect balance of working with young children and helping pre-service teachers and others in the community learn more about how children learn."

Additional information, as well as an application for enrollment, are available at coastal.edu/childdevelopmentcenter.
