Cultural arts events: ‘Get Closer to Virtue’ at CCU during philosophical discussion

From an animated historical perspective of World War II in Japan to a flutist performing selections from African-American composers, this week's guide to cultural arts events at Coastal Carolina University covers a wide variety of topics sure to appeal to a diverse range of interests. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

TUESDAY, OCT. 9

FILM

The CCU Department of History presents a screening of "Hotaru No Haka/Grave of the Fireflies" (1988) at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A-110). Following the screening, Brandon Palmer, CCU professor and chair of the Department of History, leads a discussion on the historical and personal impacts of military actions by government. The discussion considers how the Japanese remember and commemorate World War II and the American bombing of Japanese cities and whether strategic bombing is a valid method of war.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 10

FILM

CCU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents a screening of "71" at 2 p.m. at the Conway Education Center, 209, Allied Drive in Conway, S.C. This 2014 historical thriller depicts the story of a British soldier who becomes separated from his unit in Belfast during a 1971 riot at the height of the Northern Ireland conflict. MUSIC

The guitar students of Daniel Hull, lecturer in CCU's Department of Music, present a Guitar Studio Recital showcasing their mastery of the instrument at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. This concert features music from the Baroque period through the 21st century. Highlights include solos, duets and a performance from the CCU Guitar Ensemble along with selections by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Andrew York.

THURSDAY, OCT. 11

DISCUSSION

Christian Miller, visiting scholar and A.C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University, leads a discussion titled "Getting Closer to Virtue: Secular and Christian Insights on Improving Our Character" at 4:30 p.m. in the Wall Boardroom (Room 222). This discussion is based on ideas from his latest book "The Character Gap: How Good Are We?" and examines how often we fall short of the virtues and character-strengths to which we aspire.

The CCU Department of Theatre presents Martin McDonagh's 2005 Tony-Award nominated hit "The Pillowman," directed by Professor Robert Earnest at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Theatre. The Kafkaesque play centers on the interrogation of a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state regarding the gruesome content of his haunting short stories.

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

LECTURE

The CCU Department of History presents "Terrorism Since 1967," a lecture by Christopher Gunn, assistant professor in the Department of History. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments followed by a 10 a.m. session in the Burroughs and Chapin Building (Room 100). The lecture will discuss the results of the Six-Day War in the Middle East and the more general radicalization of global publics in the wake of the political upheavals of 1968, led to an internationalization of terrorism with which we are still grappling today.

MUSIC

Flutist and visiting artist James Miller gives an afternoon of concert selections by African-American composers including Valerie Coleman, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Adolphus Hailstork at 4 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. Miller currently serves as a flutist in the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own," in Washington, D.C.
