The second annual Trunk O'Treat Festival at Coastal Carolina University will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the YY parking lot on S.C. 544, across from The Cove apartment complex near the University's main campus. The family-friendly event is sponsored by CCU's Spadoni College of Education.

The festival includes candy giveaways, Halloween-themed games, slime making, bracelet and necklace making, face painting, and more. To compete in the trunk-decorating competition, there is a fee of either $10 or a bag of school supplies. All of the money raised from the trunk-decorating competition will be used to buy school supplies that will be donated to one of the partnering schools affected by Hurricane Florence.

The first-place winner of the trunk-decorating competition will receive a prize package. Participants will need to bring their own decorations, supplies and candy. This year, Trunk O'Treat is an official event of CCU's Haunted Homecoming week. Approximately 250 people attended last year's event.

Trunk O'Treat is co-hosted by the CCU Teaching Fellows, the Call Me MISTER program and the Student-South Carolina Education Association (S-SCEA).

"Last year, I led the Teaching Fellows in creating this event because I felt that we needed to interact with our surrounding community, which is constantly pouring so much support into our University," said Caitlyn Hinnerschitz, a Teaching Fellow and president of the CCU chapter of S-SCEA. "It was created to be an opportunity for education students to interact with children and in turn enable the children to have a fun night at Coastal engaging in fun, educational activities."

The Student South Carolina Education Association (S-SCEA) gives education majors and those interested in education an opportunity for professional development, community and political involvement, and mentoring.

The South Carolina Teaching Fellows program is a scholarship program for qualified South Carolina high school students who wish to earn a degree in education and start their career as teachers in South Carolina's public school system following college graduation. The program provides a $24,000 scholarship/loan over four years. CCU is one of 11 institutions in the state identified as a Teaching Fellows institution.

The Call Me MISTER program assists with the recruitment, training and certification of elementary teachers from disadvantaged communities who are planning to teach in South Carolina schools, especially in the lowest performing elementary schools.

To register for the trunk-decorating competition, email Savannah Watson at sewatson@coastal.edu. Competition participants will check in at the event and pay either the $10 entry fee or donate a bag of school supplies. Attendees do not need to pre-register.
