After completing missionary work in Peru, Batten's family returned to the Little River area and she returned to nursing full time. She is currently the patient care supervisor of the emergency room at McLeod Seacoast Hospital’s expanding emergency department.

Mary Ann Batten has lived in the Myrtle Beach area for more than 30 years. She graduated with an associate's degree in applied science from USC-Coastal Carolina College in 1991, and was the treasurer for the Student Nurses Association. For several years after graduation, Batten combined part-time nursing with parenting and opened a daycare center. After completing missionary work in Peru, her family returned to the Little River area and she returned to nursing full time. She is currently the patient care supervisor of the emergency room at McLeod Seacoast Hospital’s expanding emergency department. Batten will graduate from Coastal Carolina University in August with a Bachelor of Science in nursing, alongside her daughter, who is also earning a bachelor’s degree from Coastal Carolina.
