Area ballet brings “The Nutcracker” to life on the CCU stage

"The Nutcracker" comes to the Wheelwright Auditorium two weekends in December.The Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre performs "The Nutcracker" at CCU on Dec. 8, 9, 15, 16.

This coming week at Coastal Carolina University, honors students put a new spin on a Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama and a local ballet troupe brings a performance of a yuletide classic to the Wheelwright Auditorium stage.

Tuesday, Dec. 4

FILM

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies presents a screening of "Le Chef" (2012) at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A110). Following the screening, Elaine Berard, teaching associate in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, leads a discussion on French and American attitudes toward food.

MUSIC

The CCU Concert Choir presents "A World of Carols" at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church on 1001 Fifth Ave. in Conway, S.C. This program features a wide and entertaining variety of choral and solo music - ancient to modern, familiar carols and little-known numbers - from American, Caribbean, European and African traditions.

Wednesday, Dec. 5

EXHIBIT

The Department of Visual Arts presents a CCU senior art exhibit at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery (Edwards 129). The exhibition is the culmination of four years of study and features projects completed during students' capstone courses.

Saturday, Dec. 8

THEATRE

The Department of Cultural Arts and Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre (CYBT) presents the yuletide classic "The Nutcracker" at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. The annual, highly anticipated production features 60 of the area's most talented young dancers together with CYBT ballerina Kiely Elizabeth Clark as the Sugar Plum Fairy and New York City-based guest artist Mikhail IIyin as the Cavalier. VIP Backstage Passes are available (for an extra fee) that allow passholders the opportunity to go backstage before the show and meet the dancers, have photographs taken, and receive an autographed poster. THEATRE

HTC Honors College and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies present a CCU student production of "A Tempest" (1969), Aime Cesaire's postcolonial translation of William Shakespeare's classic drama "The Tempest," at 4 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium (Wall 116). This production is a culminating project of students enrolled in Honors 201, 202 and 203 courses, which share a theme of colonialism.
