What is Statistics?

Statistics is the science of understanding data. It is an entire process ranging from designing studies and data collection, to summarizing and representing data, using data to make inferences and build models, and interpreting results.

Statistics is a highly interdisciplinary study that uses math and computer programming as tools in addition to subject matter expertise. In a world abundant with data, knowledge of statistics is imperative.

Why Study Statistics?

The Applied Statistics program aims to give undergraduates the skills needed in an ever-changing job market. Obtaining a degree in applied statistics opens graduates to one of the top jobs in the country. Students seeking graduate school before entering the job market will be well-equipped to thrive in a graduate setting.

Skills commonly desired for a career in statistics include:

  • Strong background in math
  • Understanding of statistical terms and concepts
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Professionalism in written and oral communication
  • Communication of statistical results to various audiences
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a group
  • Great attention to detail
  • Expertise in statistical programming languages and computer languages, such as SAS, R, Python, and SQL
