Coastal Carolina University Orchestra and Long Bay Symphony collaborate this holiday season

LECTURE

The Department of English and Women in Philanthropy and Leadership present a reading and book signing by Tessa Fontaine at 5:30 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116. Fontaine is the author of The Electric Woman: A Memoir in Death-Defying Acts, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great Writers pick and an Amazon Editor's Choice writer. The event is part of the Words to Say It Visiting Writers Series.

Tuesday, Nov. 27

FILM

The Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts presents a screening of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 "2001: A Space Odyssey" at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A-110). A faculty panel including Dean Dan Ennis will discuss the way "Strauss, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30," Richard Strauss' 1896 tone poem, has been used (and misused?) in films such as Kubrick's.

MUSIC

The CCU Department of Music presents Acoustic Songbook at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. The performance showcases a small group of student vocalists and instrumentalists who specialize in unplugged versions of popular songs. Genres include folk, Americana, jazz, world music, contemporary music theater, musical film and the British Invasion.

LECTURE

The E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration and the Community and Business Engagement Institute lead a program titled "Entrepreneur Showcase: Business and Innovation of the Grand Strand II" at 6 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. In this second annual celebration, local entrepreneurs who have grown successful businesses will present their plans in a "Shark Tank"-style format. Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for the Grand Strand's Best Start-Up.

LECTURE

Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services presents a lecture titled "Playing the Race Card" at 6:30 p.m. in Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A-213). CCU students, staff, faculty and community members will engage in an open dialogue about various topics centered on social injustice, inclusion and diversity with a focus on "the race card," including the term's cultural use, context, meaning and validity.

MUSIC

The Coastal Carolina University Orchestra joins the Long Bay Youth Symphony under the direction of Charles Jones Evans at 7:30 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. The performance will feature musical sections that range from the Baroque to contemporary pieces from the 20th century.

In its Second Stage series, the CCU Department of Theatre joins with the Women's and Gender Studies program to present Suzan-Lori Parks' "In the Blood" at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Theatre. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (2000), this intense reimagining of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" follows Hester, an impoverished, homeless, illiterate mother of five, struggling to care for her children. This production contains content that is inappropriate for children. Parental discretion is advised.

MUSIC

The CCU Department of Music presents a performance titled "Pushing the Limits with Steve Bailey, Featuring Victor Wooten and Greg Bissonette" at 7:30 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. Matt White, associate professor, and Tim Fischer, assistant professor, both in CCU's Department of Music, round out the ensemble. The group will perform eclectic high-energy jazz and world-premiere selections from the CCU Jazz Ensemble.

CCU faculty and friends perform a holiday-themed musical at 4 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. The performance will be in genres ranging from jazz, folk and crossover classical to world music and pop. David Bankston, professor in the Department of Music, will perform on vocals and guitar, joined by his colleagues in the Department of Music in this holiday event.
