Jamie Goodall of Stevenson University, as the first lecturer of the Spring 2019 Cultural Heritage Studies Speaker Series at Coastal Carolina University, will discuss piracy culture in the Caribbean world in her presentation "Wreckers, Pirates and Smugglers: From Salvage to Consumption" at 5:15 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium on Jan. 22.

Goodall will explain how the stealing, selling and buying of commodities, as well as pirate labor in the Caribbean islands, formed the foundation for the growth of a larger Atlantic economy. She is an assistant professor of public history, and her work moves piracy from the margins of the Caribbean world to the center of it.

The 2019 lineup of cultural arts events at Coastal Carolina University emerges at full speed right out of the gate this month with a wide range of music, theater, film and lecture events. All are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
