Biography

Steven James Higginbotham is a proud native of Cleveland, Ohio, and he has worked as a director, choreographer, educator, performer, and leader in collegiate, community, and professional arts organizations for over 25 years. Steven earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Education from the University of Arizona and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from Florida State University. He held faculty and leadership positions at Eastern Kentucky University, Eastern Arizona College, and Pima College before coming to Coastal Carolina University to serve in this role as Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre.

As a director and choreographer, his work has been staged at the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival, Huntington Playhouse, Carousel Music Theatre, Brecksville Theater on the Square, the Theatre Education Program at the Beck Center for the Cultural Arts, and many colleges, universities, and schools. Steven has performed in plays and musicals on stages around the world, including four years of touring nationally and internationally as our favorite big yellow bird (and a featured tap dancer) in Sesame Street Live!

Steven beams with pride for his former students – they are performing on Broadway, starring on network television, appearing in feature films, and working professionally as theatre educators, scholars, practitioners, technicians, stage managers, and directors in venues across the country.
