I am thrilled to announce that Coastal Carolina University will welcome our students, faculty, and staff back to campus in the Fall of 2020.
Fulfilling our educational mission will require resourcefulness and flexibility, but we will succeed. The process by which we will return to full operations is guided by our regard for public health and our determination to best serve our students, and we share this news so our students and families are clear – they can and should plan to come back to CCU this August.

Statement from Coastal Carolina University regarding Fall 2020 on-campus instruction
Coastal Carolina University has the goal and hope of returning to on-campus instruction and welcoming students back in August, but only in the safest and healthiest way for the entire CCU community. President David A. DeCenzo has directed CCU’s Emergency Management Team to begin working on developing a framework for implementing this goal. The University’s ability to return to on-campus operations hinges on many factors that are not in our control including the status and changing circumstances of the COVID-19 virus; rescinding of state executive orders that are currently in effect; and adequate COVID-19 rapid testing capability for our faculty, staff and students to ensure a safe and healthy campus environment. We understand that many plans for our students and their families depend on our processes for restarting on-campus instruction. It is our hope to make an announcement by mid-June, allowing sufficient time for students, families, staff and faculty to prepare.

Coastal Carolina University’s Plan for Spring 2020 Housing, Dining, and Parking Credits
Following today’s guidance provided in the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education’s (CHE) news release, Coastal Carolina University (CCU) is now able to publish its plan to provide a prorated credit of housing, dining, and parking charges to current students who had a housing assignment, meal plan, or a parking permit in the Spring 2020 semester and were dislocated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
CCU implemented a number of decisive and timely measures to safeguard the safety and health of its students, staff, and faculty well before COVID-19 was labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization, and in coordination with local and state authorities. The decision to provide limited authorized access only for those students who received written approval to reside on campus during the online academic instruction period went into effect on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. CCU will calculate the prorated credit of housing, dining, and parking charges from this date.
The University intends to credit student accounts on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, and eligible students will begin to receive funds as early as Friday, April 10, 2020. These credits will be applied to a student’s account in the current term—Spring 2020. If an eligible student’s account is paid in full, a direct deposit or paper check in the amount of the credit will be issued. Current account balances are viewable on WebAdvisor and will not reflect these credits for eligible students until April 7, 2020.
As per CHE’s guidance, students who remain enrolled for the remainder of the semester are eligible for these credits. Those students who have been granted extraordinary approval to continue living on campus during the University’s delivery of online instruction are not eligible for a credit. Tuition and other academic and student service fees will not be credited as CCU will continue to provide instruction, academic resources, and critical student services online as per its academic continuity plan and adjusted hours schedule in accordance with its mission and Governor Henry McMaster’s Executive Orders.
Residential students not granted extraordinary approval to remain on campus will be eligible for the housing, dining, and parking credit without regard to their move-out date. Please remain safe and comply with all local, state, and federal guidance regarding physical distancing and relevant travel, shelter-in-place, and stay-at-home orders.
The University Housing Call Center is open now and move-out appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 3-5. CCU intends to make more move-out appointments available in early June, in accordance with the local, state, and federal guidance. Residents should monitor their CCU email account or call 843-349-6400 for more information.

In an effort to ensure student success during the upcoming period of distance learning and academic continuity, a variety of free academic resources are available for students.
CCU has partnered with VitalSource to provide free access to e-books for students who may have lost access to course materials. If students previously accessed textbooks via the library, shared a book with a classmate, or left a book on campus, visit bookshelf.vitalsource.com. Students must sign up using their University accounts (@coastal.edu).
Barnes and Noble Education, Inc. is also offering free e-textbooks for students impacted by COVID-19 campus closures.
Additional digital learning resources are available here.
Students do not need to return to campus to obtain books or notes. Faculty are advised, and will not presume, that students have physical materials in their possession.
The Kimbel Library will be available for online requests via chat, text message, email, or phone to offer reference assistance as well as downloadable resources, such as scanned materials for course reserves.
In addition, visit the COVID-19 FAQs with helpful information on specific topics. The University is also updating an Adjusted Student Services List to include daily hours of operation for essential services.
Coastal Carolina University continues to closely monitor current COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) developments in South Carolina, domestically, and abroad.
Additional information will be provided as we continue responding to these fluid circumstances.

The University has received the order from South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster closing all public schools including state-supported colleges, universities, and technical colleges.
The order also provides that personnel designated as essential or otherwise deemed necessary by the university may be required to work during the period of closure. At this time, Coastal Carolina University is proceeding with its normal spring break operations observed and all personnel are expected to report to work for their regular schedules on Monday, March 16.
In accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order, the University will also be re-examining our determination of essential employees to adapt to COVID-19 circumstances. Employees will receive additional guidance from department heads tomorrow regarding their requirements for work during the closure.
The CDC considers the following employees to be at higher risk for COVID-19:
- Older adults
- People who have serious chronic medical conditions like:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Lung disease
If you are in this group and are concerned, we ask that you contact your supervisor.
As usual, if you are unable to report to work, please follow your departments standard practice for requesting time off.
Also, please remember, as per CDC guidelines, if you are sick, or have a reasonable suspicion that you have been exposed to COVID-19, please stay home, notify your supervisor, and seek medical attention.

For your convenience, the latest information that was provided to the University campus is provided below:
Coastal Carolina University’s administration and emergency management teams have been working diligently executing our response plan for the COVID-19 virus and its potential impacts. Based on the most recent data and guidelines provided by the CDC and DHEC, and now that the World Health Organization has declared a pandemic, CCU will extend spring break for students through March 20. Classes will resume on March 23.
Campus operations, including residence halls and dining services, are open.
All faculty and staff should report for their regular work schedules. Faculty will receive direction from the Office of the Provost regarding next week’s activities.
If you or your family member is ill, please follow CDC guidelines, stay home, take appropriate precautions, and seek medical attention. If you are unable to report to work due to illness, please notify your supervisor.
Students with cold and/or flu-like symptoms are strongly encouraged to call Student Health Services at 843-349-6543.
In addition to the University’s comprehensive and ongoing cleaning program in academic, administrative, athletic, dining, and residential areas, custodial staff will increase cleaning frequency in high touch public areas.
At this time, all non-essential University-sponsored travel is suspended, both domestic and international. Employee requests for exceptions should be made to the vice president of your area for consideration. This does not include personal activity, but we urge you to reconsider travel plans to areas that have been impacted by COVID-19.
Please pay close attention to your email. The University will continue to communicate information to faculty, staff and students through email, and will post updates on the CCU advisory page.

Re: A Talk on the South Carolina Primary Election
Coastal Carolina University is hosting H. Gibbs Knotts and Jordan Ragusa from the College of Charleston on Monday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. to discuss their new book "First in the South: Why South Carolina's Presidential Primary Matters" less than a week before the primary happens. The public presentation will be in the Johnson Auditorium, Room 116 of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. Media are invited to attend; Knotts and Ragusa will be available for interviews.
Knotts is the interim dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the College of Charleston. Ragusa is the associate chair of the Department of Political Science at the College of Charleston. They are the co-directors of the American Politics Research Team there, as well.
South Carolina's presidential primary is Feb. 29.

Re: CCU alumnus Brandon Brown to race at Daytona Feb. 15
Coastal Carolina University alumnus Brandon Brown will race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Daytona International Speedway coming up on Feb. 15. Brown’s sixth-place finish at Daytona in 2019 makes him a driver to watch.
Brown started racing a part-time schedule in 2014-2015 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, with eight starts and a best finish of 14th at Dover. In 2016, he ran both the truck series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with a best finish in the latter of 23rd at Miami. He had 10 starts in 2017 in the Xfinity Series with a best finish of 17th at Dover, and in 2018, he saw six starts and a best finish of 18th. Brown saw his best finish in 2019 at Daytona, where he finished sixth.

Coastal Carolina University’s Cultural Arts Committee will present a Mayors’ Roundtable featuring area leaders discussing collaborative projects with CCU with a focus on the arts and humanities on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium (Wall 116). The event is free and open to the public.

Coastal Carolina University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI@CCU) will present Pop-up Panels for breaking news events this semester. The first panel, titled The United States and Iran: Prospects for Peace and War, will present on Tuesday, Jan. 21 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Burroughs and Chapin Center located at 290 Allied Drive on CCU's east campus.
Summary and Agenda
January 2020 finds the United States and Iran in one of the most tense moments of their troubled relationship. How close to war are we with Iran, and what avenues are there for peace in what is arguably the world’s most volatile region? CCU’s OLLI presents a panel of experts who will address the many facets of this conflict.
Panelists and their discussions include:
- Christopher Ferrero, Ph.D. – The strategic aspect of the relationship between the U.S. and Iran, what both sides seek, and the core aspects of the Iranian nuclear program.
- Christopher Gunn, Ph.D. – Iran’s regional proxies, especially Hezbollah, and how Iran makes use of them.
- Joseph Fitsanakis, Ph.D. – The current security situation and what the recent attacks tell us about that situation.
- Samih Baalbaki – Other thoughts about the situation between the U.S. and Iran.

Message from Coastal Carolina University Leadership
In the past 24 hours, Coastal Carolina University officials were made aware of a social media post that a student made on their personal social media account that showed disturbing language and conduct, including words that are extremely racist. The language and behavior displayed in the video is deeply harmful and contrary to the values and standards we expect of our students, faculty, staff, administration, and alumni. Campus leadership is taking appropriate action in response to this video being posted on social media, following up with students involved to determine appropriate steps, and providing support to members of our community.
We continue to believe that there is absolutely no place among the CCU community—nor any community—for behavior or language that degrades any individual’s or group’s race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, disability, religious beliefs, or other identities.
Our core institutional values are truth, respect, integrity, and excellence. These values directly oppose words and actions of hate and division. We ask all of Teal Nation today and every day to reflect on these values and apply them to your lives. This is what it truly means to be a Chanticleer.

Re: Launch of Women in Technology graduate certificate
On Oct. 9 at 11 a.m., Coastal Carolina University and the HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies is launching the Women in Technology graduate certificate. Megan Raymond, national education development executive from Apple, will deliver a keynote address as part of the launch.
The program provides degree-seeking and non-degree seeking students a complex understanding of culture, workplace dynamics, and leadership in technology. Using an interdisciplinary lens, students will study the business environment and culture of the technology industry, particularly focused on the ways in which gender, race, and class intersect to shape the experiences of women and other underrepresented groups in the industry.
Students will develop essential skills needed to become successful leaders and managers within this rapidly expanding field. As part of the program, students may choose to pursue certification in Swift, the programming language created by Apple for building iOS apps, or pursue a technology skill development track.
“This graduate certificate is meant to immediately address needs in the industry for women to have the leadership and technology skills required to advance,” said Sara Hottinger, dean of the HTC Honors College.
The event will take place in the Alford Ballroom inside Atheneum Hall Alumni Center on Coastal Carolina University’s campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 9. Media are invited to attend, and interview opportunities with Hottinger, Associate Dean Megan McIlreavy, and information technology major and honors student Jeanne Dehetre will be available.

Coastal Carolina University and Brandonbilt Racing will be revealing NASCAR driver and CCU alumnus Brandon Brown’s throwback car at Darlington Raceway on Aug. 13 starting at 11:30 a.m.
The event is in conjunction with Darlington Raceway’s Throwback Weekend that focuses on the years 1990-1994. Brown’s No. 86 Coastal Carolina ZL1 Chevrolet Camaro throwback look will pay homage to Terry Labonte’s 1993 Kellogg’s Cornflakes car; 1993 is the year CCU achieved status as an independent, public institution. Media are invited to cover this event; Brown and Labonte will both be available for interviews, as will Kerry Tharp, president of Darlington Raceway.
Brown, 25, graduated from CCU in 2018 with a degree in communication and now races full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 68 and No. 86 Chevrolet Camaros for Brandonbilt. This is the third year that CCU is the driver and car sponsor of Brandon Brown.
Labonte started his racing career at Darlington in 1978 and is a two-time NASCAR Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. He was named one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers in 1998 and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2016.

Coastal Carolina University has been hosting a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (C-SURF) program all summer long, which culminates in a colloquium on July 26 from 9 a.m. to noon on CCU’s main Conway campus. The colloquium will be a showcase of oral presentations by the student participants in the 10-week C-SURF program. The students in the program were selected from a national pool of candidates working in conjunction with CCU science faculty.
An agenda is available that includes the details of the presentations. Media are invited to attend the colloquium to learn more about the student participants and the National Science Foundation-funded program. Interviews with program leaders Sathish Kumar, assistant professor in the Department of Computing Sciences, and William Ambrose, CCU professor and vice dean of the School of Coastal Environment, are available upon request. In recognition of the generosity of Sunny Gupta, a leading software entrepreneur and 1992 graduate of Coastal Carolina University, CCU will rename the College of Science during a ceremony on Tuesday, July 30, at 11 a.m. The gift, one of the largest ever received by the University, will provide financial resources and student scholarship support for the college, which boasts more than 4,300 students and has the largest enrollment of CCU’s six academic colleges.
Media are invited and encouraged to cover the event, held adjacent to the Science II building at 107 Chanticleer Drive. Parking is available in the lot across Chanticleer Drive from Science II. Gupta and CCU administrators will be available for interviews.
Gupta, a native of Chandigarh, India, earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics in three years from Coastal. As a student, he served as an intern in the Chancellor’s Office, a resident adviser and as president of the International Club. He also worked in the computer science lab. Gupta is the cofounder and CEO of Apptio, one of the nation’s fastest-growing software as a service (SaaS) companies. Founded in 2007, Apptio is headquartered in Bellevue, Wash., with an additional 15 offices around the world. Gupta led Apptio to an initial public offering in September 2016 then its acquisition by Vista Equity Partners in January 2019 for $1.94 billion. He won the 2011 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Pacific Northwest.
