‘Black Beach/White Beach’ and ‘A Bite of China’ both being screened at CCU as part of cultural events lineup

'The Pillowman' has its final run on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.Xinyi Tan, assistant professor in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, will lead a discussion after the screening of "A Bite of China."

Interested in learning about traditional cuisine served on Chinese New Year? Or in watching a documentary about the Myrtle Beach motorcycle rallies? A guitar recital, lecture on the media and terrorism, a Tony Award-winning play and more are all brewing on campus this week. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

MONDAY, OCT. 15

MUSIC

The CCU Department of Music presents the South Carolina Guitar Quartet performing in Edwards Recital Hall at 5 p.m. The group is comprised of music educators from across the state including Tim Fischer, assistant professor in CCU's Department of Music, and guest artists Bert Ligon of the University of South Carolina, Monty Craig of Clemson University and Jim Mings, formerly of the University of South Carolina. The quartet will perform jazz standards and original compositions.

THEATRE

The CCU Department of Theatre presents Martin McDonagh's 2005 Tony Award-nominated hit "The Pillowman," directed by Steve Earnest, professor in the Department of Theatre, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Theatre for the final performance of the show's three-day run. This play centers on the interrogation of a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state regarding the gruesome content of his haunting short stories. Note: Production includes a loud simulated gunshot. Some material may be unsuitable for children; parental discretion is advised.

TUESDAY, OCT. 16

FILM

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at CCU presents "A Bite of China: Celebrating the Chinese New Year" (2016) at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A-110). This film, shown in Mandarin, explores the history, culture and significance of traditional dishes served on Chinese New Year. Following the screening, Xinyi Tan, assistant professor in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, leads a discussion on Chinese culinary traditions.

DISCUSSION

Women in Philanthropy and Leadership (WIPL) at CCU presents "Leading Women in Local Government," featuring three local mayors, at 5:30 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116. Panel participants Brenda Bethune, mayor of Myrtle Beach; Marilyn Hatley, mayor of North Myrtle Beach; and Barbara Blain-Bellamy, mayor of Conway, will discuss their pathways to leadership and public service.

FILM/DISCUSSION

The Charles Joyner Institute for African Diaspora Studies presents a film screening of "Black Beach/White Beach" and discussion by creator Ricky Kelly at 6 p.m. in the Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union (Room A-110). Kelly produced the independent documentary to bring awareness and education to the community on systemic racism and inequality that exist between two motorcycle rallies in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

SATURDAY, OCT. 20

LECTURE

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents a lecture titled "Media and Terrorism" beginning at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments, followed by a 10 a.m. session in the Burroughs & Chapin Building, Room 100. Misti Williams, lecturer in the Department of Communication, Media and Culture, discusses how the media has been described as the "oxygen of terror" and how the free press plays a fundamental part in advancing the goals of terrorist organizations.
