‘Something Cool’ at the center of cultural arts events this week at CCU

The Department of Music presents “Something Cool: Low Brass and Horn Ensembles” at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. The Department of Visual Arts opens Kate Kretz’s art exhibition “#Brute” in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery Oct. 22.The Department of English and Women in Philanthropy and Leadership present a fiction reading by Holly Goddard Jones at 5:30 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116.

A fiction reading, art exhibit and low brass ensemble concert highlight the offerings from Coastal Carolina University's cultural arts lineup this week. Other opportunities include a lecture on terrorism, a Broadway musical production and "West Side Story" on the big screen.

MONDAY, OCT. 22

ART EXHIBITION

The Department of Visual Arts opens Kate Kretz's art exhibition "#Brute" in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery, Edwards building Room 129. Kretz's recent work is comprised of painted embroideries generally focused on difficult truths about gun violence, vulnerabilities in motherhood and familial dysfunctionality. The exhibit runs through Nov. 28. A gallery reception, free and open to the public, is Oct. 25 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, OCT. 23

FILM

The CCU Department of Theatre presents a screening of the film "West Side Story" (1961) at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union, A-110. Following the screening, Ken Martin, CCU professor and chair of the Department of Theatre, discusses the film's casting in regard to the Hollywood perspective, gang-violence, current cultural clashes and the film's literary connection to "Romeo and Juliet."

MUSIC

The Department of Music presents "Something Cool: Low Brass and Horn Ensembles" at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. Directed by Tonya Propst, associate professor, and Chris Connolly, lecturer, both in CCU's Department of Music, the performance features music from the Renaissance to the 21st century, with a special tribute to Leonard Bernstein in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

WEDNESDAY-SATURDAY, OCT. 24-27

THEATRE

The CCU Department of Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music." The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 25 and 26 in the Wheelwright Auditorium. The production continues on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m., followed by a special command performance fundraising event that includes a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m., the show at 7:30 p.m. and a dessert reception afterward. Directed by Monica Bell, CCU associate professor in the Department of Theatre, "A Little Night Music" is a musical about love featuring the stunning melodies "The Glamorous Life," "A Weekend in the Country" and "Send in the Clowns."

THURSDAY, OCT. 25

DISCUSSION

CCU's Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services presents a discussion titled, "The Struggle is Real" at 6:30 p.m. in Wall Boardroom, Room 222. Join students, staff and faculty members in an open dialogue centered on social justice, inclusion and diversity moderated by Franklin Ellis, assistant director of Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services.

READING

The Department of English and Women in Philanthropy and Leadership present a fiction reading by Holly Goddard Jones at 5:30 p.m. in Johnson Auditorium, Wall 116. Jones is the author of "The Salt Line," "The Next Time You See Me" and "Girl Trouble: Stories." Her work has appeared in "The Best American Mystery Stories," "New Stories from the South" and "Tin House."

MUSIC

The Department of Music and Carolina Master Chorale (CMC) presents "The Stars are Out on Broadway" at:

- 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in Trinity Church, (3000 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach)

- Saturday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. in Trinity United Methodist Church, (706 14th Ave. S., North Myrtle Beach)

- Sunday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. in Trinity Church

Tim Koch, conductor of the CMC and lecturer in CCU's Department of Music, leads the chorale in a performance of Broadway favorites while accompanied by pianist Daniel Francis, teaching associate in the Department of Music. The choir sings a suite from "South Pacific" and other musical collections from the Golden Age.

LECTURE

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents "The Future of Terrorism and Armed Militancy" beginning at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and followed by a 10 a.m. session in the Burroughs & Chapin Building, Room 100. Future trends in terrorism are currently being shaped by the ongoing wars in the Middle East and elsewhere. Joseph Fitsanakis, associate professor in the Department of Politics, will explore these trends and outline what is to come in the area of terrorism and armed militancy.
