Introducing the new Microsoft Teams

As announced on Aug. 9, 2023, Microsoft has released a new, upgraded Microsoft Teams experience. CCU users can preview the New Teams on Windows computers. Users can click the Try the new Teams toggle option in the upper left corner of Teams to get started with using the new Teams.

Automatic upgrade occurs after March 31, 2024

After March 31, 2024, any classic Teams users who haven't updated to new Teams will be automatically updated to new Teams.

  • After March 31, 2024, if you’re already running on new Teams, there will be no change in behavior. Your Teams will continue working as expected.
  • Users on classic Teams will be automatically updated to the new Teams client. Users won’t be able to switch back to classic Teams after this date. Microsoft will attempt to uninstall classic Teams.

Benefits of the new Microsoft Teams

There are several upgraded benefits and features for the new Teams experience:

  • Faster and more resource-efficient. The new Teams app launches up to 2X faster and enables you to join meetings up to 2X faster. The new Teams has been optimized for more efficient use of system resources, using up to 50% less memory.
  • Collaborate more effectively across organizational boundaries. The new Teams allow users to collaborate across organizations and manage multiple work or school accounts. You can be signed into multiple organizations and accounts simultaneously and receive notifications for all your accounts, no matter which one is currently in use.
  • Enhanced IT security. The new Teams also ensures simplified IT management and enhanced data security.
  • Fresh, new visual experiences. For example, users will see the addition of group profile pictures and group theming, further customizing Teams’ chat experience.
  • More expressive. Users can experience new ways to interact with each other on new Teams. For instance, the new Teams will include a “together emoji,” that results in a playful animation when two people high-five each other — the first of many more sentiments to come.
