ArtFields 2023 Grand Prize

Writer-in-residence Amira Hanafi recently won the $50,000 top prize at ArtFields, a prestigious annual art competition in Lake City, S.C., that draws artists from throughout the Southeast. Hanafi’s work, “Mexicans in Canada,” is a digital poem that plays on a sentence spoken by Gabriel Iglesias on the documentary series Inside Jokes: “The next thing you know, there’s Mexicans in Canada.” Hanafi’s poem disassembles the sentence and reassembles it with phrases referencing places and immigrant populations around the world. A judge called the poem a “forward-thinking, cutting-edge piece that speaks to the future of digital arts.”

“Mexicans in Canada” is on display in Klosett Remixx Boutique.
