Apply to Coastal Carolina University

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is an avenue to initial certification. For the spring term, the program starts in January, and students progress through all steps to finish the following December. Prospective students must apply to the MAT program by November 20 to enroll in the cohort that begins in the spring term.  

For the Summer I term, the program starts in June, and students progress through all steps to finish the following May. Prospective students must apply to the MAT program by May 20 to enroll in the cohort that begins in the Summer I term.

‌‌Areas of Study

Students in this program must earn a baccalaureate degree, or the equivalent, in the content area of teaching specialization.  This 12-month full-time cohort program of study includes both advanced content study at the graduate level and teaching pedagogy instruction. Senior students at Coastal Carolina University may take up to two courses during their senior year (EDSC 510 and EDSC 515) that can apply toward M.A.T. program requirements.

Application Requirements

  1. Completion of the Graduate Admission Application. Payment of application fee.
  2. Official transcripts from each school or college previously attended (all prior undergraduate academic study must be represented as well as other graduate studies if such study has been completed). Emailed to graduate@coastal.edu
  3. Completion of 36 credit hours of specific content area coursework.
  4. Two recommendations to be filled out on the application. 
  5. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 in the content area AND a 2.75 GPA overall.
    a.  Candidates who have an earned content GPA of between 2.75-2.94 and/or an earned overall GPA of 2.60-2.74 may submit official scores on Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) to be considered for admission.  
    b.  The program will only accept candidates who earn a minimum score of 146 on verbal and minimum 140 on quantitative on the Graduate Record Examination, or a minimum score of 388 on the Miller Analogies Test.
    c.  Scores must be no more than five years old.
  6. Approval of the M.A.T. Graduate Admissions Committee (GAC).
