Q&A with Axsel Brown

Where are you from?

I am from Pawley Island, SC. However, I was born in Myrtle Beach, SC.

What was your major?

I majored in accounting for my undergraduate and graduate degree. For my graduate degree, my concentration was in taxation.

Why did you choose Coastal?

I was accepted into every college I applied to. However, Coastal was my first choice. Being a local, I was familiar with the campus and location. However, that is not why I choose CCU. Years ago, there was a tragedy in my community where an entire African-American family drowned because they did not know how to swim. At that time, I was in middle school. It was Coastal that hosted the "Saint Christopher Program," and allowed participants of the program to use their pool. The program was created to teach African-American youth how to swim. I was one of the participants.

What was your favorite memory of Coastal and why?

I have many favorite memories from Coastal. However, my happiest memories have all been created at the Wall Center for Excellence in the tutoring center. I enjoyed helping students learn and improve their studies. This is my favorite memory because years later, it is rewarding to have students I helped reach out to show their appreciation.

What was your favorite spot on campus and why?

The tutoring center was always my favorite spot on campus. I was always there, usually helping students. At one point, the faculty would joke that I should hide a murphy bed behind the dry erase board and just spend the night.

Who was/were your favorite professor(s) and why?

All of the professors in the accounting department are my favorite. However, the professors who have been the most impactful and helpful to me are Dr. Melanie James, Dr. Darlene Booth-Bell, and Dr. Phillip Njoroge.

How did Coastal prepare you for your current career?

Coastal has taught me crucial networking, people, and problem-solving skills.

What is your current career?

I will be working in public accounting. Currently, I accepted an offer from one of the Big Four. I will start in January of 2020.

Fun fact about yourself (this can include any award you’ve received, cool place you’ve traveled, people you’ve met, etc.)

I was named after the  character Axel Foley from the movie, "Beverly Hills Cop." My mom wanted to spell it differently, so she came up with "Axsel." I love my name. Surprisingly, my name has given me many opportunities. I’ve had employers interview me solely because of my name.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

I have a passion for teaching. Ten years from now, I see myself teaching accounting at a university.
