English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students from any of the following recognized English-speaking countries DO NOT need to provide additional English Proficiency documents.

For ALL other applicants, the English Language Proficiency requirement may be fulfilled by submitting official reports showing proof of meeting ONE of the following requirements:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

iBT (Internet Based TOEFL): 71 (undergraduate) 79 (graduate)

pBT (Paper Based TOEFL): 527

TOEFL scores must be received directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS). Coastal Carolina University's ETS institutional code is 5837.

International English Language System (IELTS)

6.0 with no sub-score lower than 5 (undergraduate) 6.5 (graduate)

There is no institutional code for the IELTS examination. 

ACT

21 on the English and Reading portion with a minimum composite score of 21

Scores must be received directly from ACT. Coastal Carolina University's institutional code is 3843

SAT

550 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing portion with a minimum combined score of 1070

SAT scores must be received directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS). Coastal Carolina University's ETS institutional code is 5837.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

4 on Higher Level English A1 or A2

ELS Language Center

Certificate of Completion of Level 110 of the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP)

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Minimum score of 51

Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)

Level of C1 or higher

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

Level of C1 or higher

Cambridge O Levels

C or higher

Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

Minimum score of 74

Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

Score of 645

General Certificate of Secondary Education

C or higher on English OR General Certificate of Education “O” level in English language 

For Transfer applicants:

3 credit hours of English Composition with a “C” letter grade or higher; AND

a minimum overall GPA of 2.50; AND

a minimum of 24 transferrable credits of course work from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university OR from an accredited higher education institution located in the approved list of English-speaking countries. (see below) 

 

For any applicant who meets ALL other admission requirements EXCEPT English Proficiency, a decision of Conditional Admission may be granted. This will allow the applicant ONE YEAR from the date of conditional admission to provide proof of English Language Proficiency through one of the means listed above.
