English Language Proficiency & Exemptions

English Proficiency Requirements

All applicants who did not graduate from native English-speaking countries will be required to provide adequate proof of English Language Proficiency. Coastal Carolina University considers the countries listed below to have English as their native language. If an applicant's country is not listed, proof of English Language Proficiency must be received by the University by the application deadline.

The English Language Proficiency may be fulfilled by submitting official reports showing a minimum score from one of the following English language tests taken

    Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

    • iBT (Internet Based TOEFL): 71
    • pBT (Paper Based TOEFL): 527

    TOEFL scores must be received directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS). Coastal Carolina University's ETS institutional code is 5837.

  • »

    International English Language System (IELTS)

    • 6.0 with no sub-score lower than 5

    There is no institutional code for the IELTS examination.

    ACT

    • 21 on the English and Reading portion with a minimum composite score of 21

    Scores must be received directly from ACT. Coastal Carolina University's institutional code is 3843

  • »

    SAT

    • 550 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing portion with a minimum combined score of 1070

    SAT scores must be received directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS). Coastal Carolina University's ETS institutional code is 5837.

    International Baccalaureate (IB)

    4 on Higher Level English A1 or A2

  • »

    Pearson Test of English (PTE)

    Score of 51

  • »

    Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)

    Level of C1 or higher

  • »

    Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

    Level of C1 or higher

  • »

    Cambridge O Levels

    C or higher

  • »

    Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

    Score of 74

  • »

    Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

    Score of 645

  • »

    General Certificate of Secondary Education

    C or higher on English OR General Certificate of Education “O” level in English language

  • »

    Completion of English Composition (Transfer Students)

    • 3 credit hours of English Composition with a “C” letter grade or higher;
    • Minimum overall GPA of 2.50
    • Minimum of 24 transferrable credits of course work from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university OR from an accredited higher education institution located in the approved list of English-speaking countries.
