hrough the centuries, great composers have celebrated all kinds of love – religious, romantic, and platonic, loves for adventure, activities, and physical objects – through their music. Directed by Timothy Koch, CCU director of choral activities, “A Many Splendored Thing” presents music from the Renaissance, Baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary periods of music, including Broadway, vocal jazz, and popular styles, all celebrating unique facets of love.

ST. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTET

Monday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m.

The award-winning St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) is renowned for the intensity of its performances, the breadth of its repertoire, and its commitment to concert experiences that are intellectually exciting and emotionally alive. With Geoff Nuttall and Owen Dalby on violin, Lesley Robertson on viola, and Christopher Costanza on cello, the quartet has been described as “dramatic” and “wickedly attentive” with a “hint of rock ’n’ roll energy.” Performance repertoire includes Franz Josef Haydn’s String Quartet in D major, Op. 20, No. 4, and String Quartet in C, Op. 20, No. 2.

FROM PAGE TO STAGE: ORIGINAL WORKS FROM CCU COMPOSERS

Tuesday, Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m.

This concert features new original chamber works from composers Donald Sloan, professor, and Andrew Fowler, lecturer, both of CCU’s Department of Music, performed by faculty, students, and guest artists. The performance will feature the CCU Electronic Music Ensemble as well as performers on piano, clarinet, and cello.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the Carolina Master Chorale’s most popular annual program. This year’s theme focuses on our universal love for cuisine. Timothy Koch, CCU director of choral activities and Carolina Master Chorale music director, leads the concert of music from across the ages and genres of music history.

CHANGYONG SHIN

ChangYong Shin, internationally renowned pianist of the Republic of Korea, presents a piano recital in the solo and chamber genres. First-prize winner of the Hilton Head International Competition (2016) and the Kookmin Ilbo and Hansei University Music Competition (2005), Shin has also won awards at the C. Bechstein & Samik Music Competition and the CBS Competition.

TRIO PALOOZA!
AN EVENING WITH KATE MCGARRY, KEITH GANZ AND GARY VERSACE

Monday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m.

With six critically acclaimed CDs and two Grammy nominations (2019 and 2009) for Best Jazz Vocal CD, Kate McGarry has become recognized as a jazz artist who brings authenticity and vitality to every song regardless of genre. The Wall St. Journal calls her music, "Austere and elegant," New York Times pronounced it, “astute and sensitive".  She currently performs in jazz clubs, performing arts centers and festivals throughout the US and abroad.

NATION BEAT

Wednesday, Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m.

CCU’s Department of Music presents Nation Beat, a performance of jazz-infused, funkified New Orleans-meets-Brazil carnival sound. The band has long been at the forefront of merging different musical elements together. In 2017, it entered a new phase in its cross-cultural exploration when it combined the sounds of brass band and percussion. Band leader Scott Kettner performs on drums, Paul Carlon on tenor sax, Mark Collins on trumpet, Mariel Bildsten on trombone, and Joe Correia on sousaphone.
