Why Denver?

After a three-year hiatus, Coastal Carolina University is excited to announce that the annual Alternative Spring Break Trip is back! Because of the effects of COVID-19, the majority of our student body has been unable to participate in community projects like that of an Alternative Spring Break for the vast duration of their college career. That is why, with the return of ASB, we thought it only fair to choose a service team made up entirely of seniors. We wanted to give our seniors the opportunity to finish school the way we wish they’d been able to start it: through tangible community engagement!

To really shake off the dust, we’re going BIG this year to deliver an experience that our seniors will never forget. The mountains are calling, so we’re headed to Colorado in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Denver where we will aid in the construction of a new Habitat home!

An Alternative Break is a week long trip where students engage in direct service focused around a particular social justice issue. Alternative Breaks are broken into several parts: pre-service orientation, direct service, post-service reflection.

During the pre-trip orientation, students are educated about their social issue and the Active Citizen Continuum in order to be fully prepared for their service experience. During the service trip, students participate in hands-on work with multiple community orginizations related to the social issue. Post-trip reflection offers the students a chance to think about their week of service as well as, consider future actions and decisions that can further help their communities with prevalent social issues.
